Diabetes

0646354001584634452.jpgDiabetes is a challenging and life altering condition to deal with on many levels.  Did you know that it can affect how your body responds to surgeries and how quickly you heal?  There are more than one type of Diabetes and each type poses unique risks to your health and treatments.   If your blood sugar is not under control, your body’s ability to heal is hindered.  This can affect your gums, bones, and teeth! Type I Diabetes is usually referred to as insulin dependent and is usually controlled by insulin injections and close monitoring of blood sugars.  Type II Diabetes is sometimes referred to as non-insulin dependent and is usually controlled by diet, exercise, and medication if necessary.  Uncontrolled diabetes may lead to gum disease and a higher rate of cavities.  Some people do not even realize that they have diabetes until it has wreaked havoc on the body. The American Diabetes Association summarizes the common symptoms of diabetes:

  • Urinating often
  • Feeling very thirsty
  • Feeling very hungry - even though you are eating
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Blurry vision
  • Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal
  • Weight loss - even though you are eating more (type 1)
  • Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2)
  • Make an appointment so that we can discuss your unique situation and how it may affect you.
