Did My Baby Steal My Calcium?

Pregnancy is a piece of cake!!  We don’t hear that too often, but we do hear “my teeth haven’t been the same since I was pregnant”.  Many people think that their baby pulled all of the calcium out of their teeth.  “My baby stole my calcium”!  This is not really the case, but pregnancy sure does alter our mouth.  The hormone changes that women experience during pregnancy may alter the oral environment and change the way our gums behave.  Mix that with an exaggerated gag reflex when using a toothbrush and you have the potential for problems!  Don’t forget to visit the dentist on a routine basis. Periodontal disease has been linked to low birth weight with babies so it is very important to stay up to date with your cleanings.  It is extremely important for you and your little one to maintain regular dental visits and oral hygiene while you are pregnant.  We would love to take a look at your mouth before, during, or after your pregnancy and answer any questions you may have.  Call our office or come visit us in Chesterton, Indiana.
